For patients

A treatment you use at home, and a team that handles the rest.

Your healthcare provider has referred you to Waypoint Medical to evaluate whether pneumatic compression therapy may be appropriate for you. Here is what that means and what happens next.

What is pneumatic compression therapy?

A pneumatic compression device is a pump used at home with a specialized garment worn over the affected arm or leg. The garment contains chambers that inflate and deflate in sequence, applying controlled pressure to the affected area.

The goal is to help manage lymphedema as part of the treatment plan prescribed and monitored by your healthcare provider. It works alongside your other care, not instead of it.

Who Waypoint is

Waypoint Medical is a home medical equipment service company. We do not make the decisions about your care — your provider does that. Our job is to review your insurance coverage, work with your provider's office on the documentation your plan requires, coordinate your device and garment, and teach you how to use it.

You will have a person to call. You should not have to chase paperwork.

What happens next

Five steps, and we lead you through each one

  1. Step 1

We review your benefits and coverage requirements

Waypoint reviews your insurance benefits and the medical information provided by your healthcare team.

  2. Step 2

    We contact you

A Waypoint team member will call, explain the process and answer your questions. If additional measurements, documentation or an evaluation are needed, we help coordinate them.

  3. Step 3

    We work with your provider

We work with your healthcare provider to obtain the documentation and prescription your insurance plan requires. Some plans require documented conservative treatment — such as compression garments, exercise and elevation — before a device can be covered.

  4. Step 4

    We coordinate your device

Once coverage requirements are met, Waypoint coordinates your device and garment, delivery, fitting and education.

  5. Step 5

    You begin home therapy

We show you how to apply the garment, operate the pump and follow the treatment settings prescribed by your healthcare provider — and we stay available afterward.

What we will need from you

Short, and we will walk you through it.

  • Current insurance information
  • A few minutes to review your history and the process
  • Participation in measurements or an evaluation, if required
  • A call or note if your insurance or contact information changes

A few important things to know

Straight answers, before anything is delivered.

  • Insurance coverage is based on your individual plan and your medical documentation.
  • Waypoint reviews your available benefits and lets you know what, if anything, you may be responsible for before your device is delivered.
  • Your healthcare provider determines whether this therapy is medically appropriate and sets your treatment plan.
  • Continue your existing compression, exercise, elevation, wound care or other treatment unless your provider tells you otherwise.
Patient questions

Common questions

Will my insurance cover this?
We cannot answer that before we check. Coverage depends on your individual plan and on the documentation in your medical record. Waypoint reviews your available benefits and lets you know what, if anything, you may be responsible for before your device is delivered.
How long does this take?
It depends on your plan and on how complete the documentation already is. Some plans, including Traditional Medicare for lymphedema, require a documented period of conservative treatment and a follow-up assessment before a device can be covered. We track the dates and keep you informed rather than leaving you wondering.
Do I stop wearing my compression garments?
No — not unless your healthcare provider tells you to. Compression garments, exercise and elevation remain part of lymphedema care. Pneumatic compression is used alongside them as part of your provider's plan.
How long will I use the device each day?
Your healthcare provider prescribes the pressure, frequency and duration for you specifically. We will show you how to follow those settings; we do not set them.
What if I cannot afford my portion?
Tell us. Waypoint has a formal financial process: our billing team can review secondary coverage, payment-plan options and, if needed, a financial hardship application. Submitting an application does not guarantee assistance, and financial assistance does not change what your plan requires for coverage.
