Waypoint coordinates home pneumatic compression therapy for two conditions with documented Medicare coverage pathways. Each has its own criteria — they are not interchangeable.
Lymphedema
Lymphedema is swelling caused by excess lymph fluid when the lymphatic system cannot clear fluid normally. It may be primary — arising from congenital or developmental causes — or secondary, following lymph-node removal, radiation, surgery, trauma, scarring or other damage to lymphatic channels.
It is a chronic condition. Poorly controlled lymphedema can contribute to skin breakdown, wounds, recurrent cellulitis, hospitalization and functional decline, which is why control matters beyond appearance.

Edema is not the same as lymphedema
Edema on its own does not establish a Medicare-covered lymphedema pathway. The record has to be patient-specific: the treating practitioner documents the diagnosis, the actual findings and the severity.
Chronic venous insufficiency with venous stasis ulcers
Medicare treats chronic venous insufficiency of the lower extremities as a separate pathway, and the lymphedema criteria do not carry over to it.
For CVI, home pneumatic compression coverage requires one or more venous stasis ulcers that have failed to heal after a six-month trial of conservative therapy directed by the treating physician. That conservative trial includes compression, appropriate wound dressings, exercise and limb elevation.
Worth being precise about
Chronic venous edema by itself is not the same as meeting the CVI-with-ulcer pathway. The ulcer history and the duration of physician-directed conservative treatment have to be documented. Commercial plans may apply different criteria.
What about other causes of swelling?
Patients present with edema for many reasons — cardiac, renal, hepatic, venous, post-surgical, medication-related. Home pneumatic compression is not an answer to all of them, and we will not tell you it is.
